about

EC Split 23
by Ben Presto and Jeremiah Paddock
an Electronic Cottage release

\\\\\\\\\
Ben Presto
(tracks 1-6)

Jeremiah and I, after throwing down a series of brainstorming ideas for the EC Split Album, agreed on the theme that it would be good for both of us, and we came to the "journey".
But what do we mean by "journey" (voyage, trip, etc.)? The naked and raw meaning/sign or the metaphor of it?
It made me think of all sorts of journeys, of the vastness of knowledge... of everything except a vacation!
From the voyage with psychotropic substances to death, from nightmare to infinite silence, from physical escape from one place to another (better? worse?) to that of a book, or a film, or a music album.
Many ideas have been suggested to me by the films. I could have pulled out an album of at least 2 hours!
So I made (unrecognizable!) plunderphonics, fishing with full hands from every source of sounds/ideas.
In the titles (as in the cover) there are tributes to "The Trip" by Corman, to "Dead Man" by Jarmusch, to "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad", to "The Twilight Zone", to Wenders, to Carpenter, to library music as well as darker prog and electronics.
More obscure I said, because the whole thing seems to sound very gloomy, but, I swear, I did a great search to get there to an aural, synaesthetic experience.
I hope I did my best!

Jeremiah Paddock
(tracks 7-22)

Patrizio and I talked about journeys as being a theme or idea for the split. My physical ability to make exciting or long journeys was dramatically shortened by a disease. With the advent of COVID my work schedule changed and I was sent to work at a different location. The new location was 20 minutes from my home and on the drive there was a traffic circle that I drove through everyday, twice a day. I was not in a great place mentally and felt trapped in my own endless roundabout. More and more time was spent trying to map my mental journeys. I began composing guitar loops in the morning before work, trying to put some of these feelings into music. Depending on the day I really think you are able to hear my mood and state of mind.
