Naturejamz

from jamz by Canned Ham

/

about

During a day-long recording session at Hal and Mark McGee's apartment in Gainesville, the Canned Ham quartet sallied forth into the nearby Forest Park to "play Nature". Mark McGee, Bulky Acronym, and Hal McGee each carried a pair of drum sticks and A.J. Herring, his banjo. Bulky Acronym and the McGee Brothers applied their beating implements to soccer goals and spectator benches, utility poles, park signs, logs, rocks, boulders, trees, stumps, waste receptacles, abandoned toilet and other discarded items, twigs, drainage grates, etc. - and all the while Herring improvised phrases, riffs, and impressionistic flourishes on his banjo (at one point he even played his banjo with a tree stump). Recorded by Hal McGee on microcassette. Photo of Bulky Acronym, Mark McGee, and A.J. Herring by Hal McGee.
