From June 1st through 30th, 2023 I made 326 recordings
of the sounds of my daily life in Gainesville, Florida, USA
with four Sony ICD-PX470 stereo digital dictaphones
that I carried with me in my pants pocket everywhere I went
- At the end of the month I mixed the recordings together
into what I call a dictaphone assemblage
using a random chance shuffle procedure
- This is my highly personal form of audio folk art
You will hear sounds from many different times, places, and spaces
occurring simultaneously as you listen
-- perhaps similar to the sensations of a 1960s Happening,
or a flea market or carnival, a county fair or a circus
Or perhaps you could imagine what it would be like to watch four home movies projected simultaneously
- You will help me to complete the audio work by active listening:
by directing your attention to the sounds
your mind will organize the sounds into unexpected forms
of music and experience
- You will hear mixed together:
my dog, Stanley
my brother Mark, Mom, Dad, and other family members,
neighbors, co-workers, grocery store employees,
public transportation, emergency vehicles, traffic, aircraft,
birds, thunderstorms, rain, wind,
and voice and memo recordings by Gerardo Colin, K.R. Seward,
and Rafael González
- Plus I played:
circuit bent Casio SK-1, KQ Unotone & GarageBand iPhone synths,
Moog Rogue and Behringer Poly D analog synthesizers,
transparent plastic ukulele, and two string pink dumpster guitar
- You will also hear the sounds of my brother playing percussion,
which I recorded through his closed bedroom door
- And thanks to Leslie Singer and Rafael González for ideas and inspirations

another great album from Dylan Houser--soundtrack to an alternate reality or maybe a better version of our reality, or the reality that belongs with this soundtrack is better, anyway. Charles Kramer
