COLLABORATORY
Collage — Collaboration — Laboratory
dictaphone assemblage audio folk art
From September 1st through 30th 2023 Rafael González and Hal McGee made 445 dictaphone recordings in La Laguna, Canary Islands, Spain, and Gainesville, Florida, USA. At the end of September we mixed the recordings together using an automated random chance shuffle procedure. COLLABORATORY is one continuous immersive audio assemblage, which we have divided into six parts for the listener’s convenience (the sixth part is available as a bonus track in the download).
The listener completes the audio assemblage through active listening. Your mind will find patterns in the chaos. Have fun trying to figure it out!
Rafael recorded these sounds with a Sony ICD-PX470 stereo digital dictaphone:
his voice, Korg Monotron, guitar, trumpet, MiniFreak V software, microcassettes, reel-to-reel tape recorder, shortwave, mixer, various objects such as pieces of paper, plastic bags and field recordings, and sounds of his daily life.
Hal recorded these sounds with two Sony ICD-PX470 stereo digital dictaphones:
sounds of his daily life, co-workers, family, neighbors, his voice, circuit bent Casio SK-1, transparent plastic ukulele, two-string pink dumpster guitar, Casio CT-S200RD keyboard. Plus Hal recorded the sounds of Trevor and him playing Behringer Poly D and Behringer Odyssey analog synthesizers (with Source Audio Collider Delay & Reverb and Alesis Microverb III effects units).
You will also hear Hal's dog Stanley, of course!
Our friend Trevor Luke participated in COLLABORATORY. You will hear his voice engaging in conversation with Hal, and him playing analog synthesizers.
COLLABORATORY has been conceived, designed, developed, recorded, photographed, and assembled by Rafael González and Hal McGee, and it is a celebration of our friendship, and coffee, and brutal naps.
